Air Compressor Parts

A bit of know-how regarding air compressor parts may come in handy, not only when buying the system itself, but also when something goes wrong with it. Though the person does not have to fix it himself, he should still learn about it to get the proper ones that will make the usage better.

Air Filter

Air filters are one of the most important air compressor parts because it protects the system from dust. This can be sucked in by the compressor upon use. The valves and other parts will weaken because of this, so a person should take care to replace it or at least clean it after use. Cleaning the air filter will save the user money because having a dirty one will lessen the output capacity of the system, thus needing more power. With this in mind, the compressor should never be used without the filter on.

The filter is usually located in some type of plastic housing. When in use, this should not be opened. Also, when trying to purchase an air filter, check the dust capacity, flow rate, and the extraction efficiency for better results.

Pressure switch

This part tells the compressor when to start or stop, making it very essential. Sadly, this is one of the air compressor parts that get broken easily. When buying a new one, an individual should look for a similar type so it will function correctly, but if that is not possible, then just search for the following.

Power rating- It is recommended to get a pressure switch with a higher power rating for the motor. This can be measured in horsepower, kilowatts, or amps.
Mechanical connection- The old pressure switch was connected to the air receiver. The individual should be careful in buying the same type of connection that was used before.

Pressure band- The user can always set a maximum or minimum amount of pressure. Typically, it can go from 6 or 7 bars, but the individual can always look for lower or higher ones depending on what he is comfortable with, or how he decides to utilize his air compressor.

Oil filter

Oil filters are typically found in larger compressors. They function by filtering the oil to get rid of dirt or any other particles that can potentially harm the compressor in the long run. Also, it would be better to get an oil filter containing a by-pass valve because it permits the oil to flow freely without having to go through the oil filter. This will help the compressor if the filter is dirty, or the oil is still cold. Do not purchase a cheap oil filter because it clogs down quickly and do not have the by-pass valve feature.

Compressor oil

This is not really considered as one of the air compressor parts, but it does make the system run, so the user should still learn about this. Using the correct oil for the compressor is vital because contrary to popular belief, it is not only used for lubrication.
Other functions- The oil can cool down the essential air compressor parts by removing the heat from the system. Air leakage will not occur because the oil can also function as a seal.

It is important that the user should not run the compressor for a long period on an environment where there is a high temperature. Because of this, the oil will form a thin coating on the surface of the compressor parts, and this will slowly destroy the system prompting the user to clean or replace it.

Compressor valves

The valve prevents the air flow from going back to the direction where it came from. A lot of valves can be found in a compressor; sometimes it may even contain five of them. Inside the valve, there is a spring and a disc. It would be alright for the air to pass in the allowed direction, but once it tries to go back, the disc and spring work together to block it.

Motor

Motor power is measured using horsepower or kilowatts. Electro motors are the ones powering a small compressor. This is typically utilized in air compressors found in the house. Larger ones are powered by diesel, while compressors found in plants are powered by steam turbines. When purchasing this type of air compressor parts, make sure that the HP or KP is checked first.

Cooler

Every compressor contains a cooler for the heat generated. Smaller compressors have simple cooler. This can be found in the area of the discharge pipe. This is the pipe between the receiver and the compressor itself. Meanwhile, the larger compressor has an oil cooler, as well as the after cooler. The former functions by cooling the hot oil before it come back to the compressor part. The latter, can cool the compressed air before it reaches the compressor.
